The Gentle Art of Discipline

Prof. Roger Fusselman

Abstract

One of the greatest challenges any teacher of children faces is controlling the classroom. With so many people in the class, each with different values and expectations, it may be difficult to keep students on task, prevent bad behavior, or rein in discord. Fortunately, different approaches to discipline have been developed. These models show that the art of discipline is gentler, less strict than what people would expect.

This particular presentation organizes dozens of suggestions for the more orderly classroom within the LEAST approach to discipline (Robert R. Carkhuff, 1981), which emphasizes responding cautiously and methodically while observing how activity in the classroom progresses. These observations will include ideas from other models of discipline and from the presenter’s own experience as a teacher of elementary school students.
