How to Publish in an Academic Journal (2PM-2:50PM)

Abstract:

For many authors, writing their first academic journal article can be a daunting process. This practical workshop, presented by the editor of a US-backed academic journal firm, will cover a variety of topics addressing he writing, submitting, and revision stages. The writing stage looks at choosing a journal, manuscript preparation and submission and ending with rejection. The final revision stage looks at addressing the comments of reviewers and resubmitting. Following the presented topics, author success can be greatly improved. The workshop will conclude with Q & A.

Biography:

Brandon Walcutt, in addition to teaching English, TESOL and other subjects at Korean universities for roughly 13 years, is also the managing editor for a small, US-based academic publishing company, which offers the International Journal of Teaching, Education and Language Learning (www.sapientpress.com), which focuses primarily on TESOL-related topics.

"Beyond the ‘English Only’ Rule: Promoting and Encouraging English Use in the EFL Classroom" (3PM-3:50 PM)

 

Abstract:

Many institutions teaching EFL employ Énglish only policies in a bid to speed up students ’acquisition of English. While these policies may at times have the desired effect, they serve to potentially limit teachers by preventing them from employing the students’ L1 as an instructional tool, and may in some cases cause stress and discouragement for weaker students. Alternative approaches to encouraging students to use English may be desirable. This workshop focuses on these alternative approaches, covering the factors in activity design, class organization, and teacher behavior that make students more or less likely to choose to use English with the teacher and amongst themselves in the classroom. Attendees will also have the opportunity to share their own thoughts and ideas about the subject with each other, with the goal being that everyone can take away some ideas to help increase English use among students in their own classes.

 

Biography:

Stewart Gray is an English teacher at Baekseok Culture University, and a graduate of the Dankook University TESOL program. He has been living and teaching in Korea five years. His main research interests are language, identity, motivation, critical thinking and reflective practice.  He is currently the organizer of the Seoul KOTESOL reflective practice SIG.
