June 13 is the last meeting of the semester for Jeonju-North Jeolla KOTESOL. We will be meeting at 2:45 in room 109 in Truth Hall (Jilligwan) at Jeonju University. Our first meeting in the fall will be on the 12th of September.

We are very fortunate to have a speaker fresh from KOTESOL's National Conference in Seoul two weeks ago: Jason Lapointe. He is going to give us his presentation on lesson plans from the conference. Jason will be giving lesson ideas we can use as is or to help develop our own ideas with. Read the entire abstract below.
Also Ingrid Zwaal will be presenting on using go fish, a children's card game, to practice English speaking and drilling in the classroom. This can be applied to students of various ages and abilities.

And Now for Something Completely Different: Lesson Ideas

Are you new to the ESL field and need some interesting ideas for your classes? Do you simply want a plethora of lesson ideas hurled at you to pick and choose from? In that case, I have a few ideas that you could use and develop on your own. I've been teaching EFL in South Korea for a year, having previously also taught Math, Science, Biology, Physics, and French in Canada, and have developed some lessons that have really enthused students. Some of these lessons have been based on a role-playing zombie apocalypse story, newsworthy topics like space, genetic therapy and global warming, various social media themes, television sitcoms, and mobile and board games. This workshop will detail some of my more successful lessons, focusing mainly on student reactions, lesson developments, and some sample results. I’ll also provide you with my worksheets to do with as you please. It’s been a pleasure interacting with students and building their confidence with the English language. As many of my lessons provide a great deal of creative freedom, students have produced very intelligent, mature, and comical ideas in each of these lessons. I hope to see you there!
Bio: While my past work experience includes teaching high school English, Math, Science, Physics, and French and university Biology, I am currently teaching EFL at KAIST in Daejeon. Despite my educational background having focused mainly on scientific research, I’ve always been interested in education and teaching. My background in science and research has helped me explore and develop task-based learning methods, as the structure of science projects has always emphasized freedom and rewarded creativity.

Go Fish for English

Listen and repeat, listen and repeat, listen and repeat. Do you know any student of any age who enjoys it? But how else can you get students to practice pronunciation, sentence structure and fluency? How about a nice card game? Go fish lends itself to many different levels of English. You can use it for different questions and answers and for any size class if you make enough cards. Students usually immerse themselves into the game once they learn the basic structure, and the best part is that reluctant students usually spend the game talking loudly. They discover that they have to listen to everyone if they want to win, and short term memory improves also. The repetition helps develop pronunciation, and they need to repeat or alter sentence structure depending on the grammar they are practicing and how you structure that particular game. You can make it simple or complicated. It depends on your needs. Once the cards are made, the preparation is limited. Once they learn the game, if you want to use it for more complicated structures, it is easy for the students to adapt. I will teach you how to play, make the cards and give you some card sets to start you off.
Bio: Ingrid Zwaal has been teaching in Jeonju at every level for over twenty years. She has been a member of KOTESOL for almost as long, currently the National 2nd VP and Jeonju North Jeolla president. She currently works for Jeonju University. When not in the classroom, she is often found playing volleyball with students half her age. She is also a weekly columnist for Saejeonbuk Newspaper. Her hobbies include magic, music and gaming. She lives with Spike, her Scottie, and four birds.
