Title: Finding Balance: Phonics Education for Young Learners (presentation/discussion)

Abstract: There are times when teaching phonics seems to take too long, become monotonous, or even be unnecessary. How can we teach phonics, in combination with other parts of English language learning, to create engagement and results? This question is something that is quite commonly asked among ESL, EFL, and even elementary school teachers in countries where English is a primary language.  This presentation and discussion will look holistically at English language learning and phonics education for young learners between 5 and 10 years of age.

Bio: Madeleine Grace is the owner/operator of an English study room in Mokpo, South Korea, and the founder/developer of Fledgling Phonics. She holds an M.ED in Curriculum Development and a BFA in Fine Art.  Madeleine's teaching experience includes teaching students in Asia and in the United States in both Art and English to different age levels from 5-year-olds to adults. Her business has a strong focus on building a strong foundation of English knowledge that allows her students to be successful English learners and users in South Korea and globally.

Title: How to Use Dynamic Assessment and Genre Analysis for Teaching Writing

Abstract: Traditional assessment has been used as a tool for grading students’ past performance rather than as a future-oriented tool that enables students to develop and improve as a part of instruction. Dynamic assessment in which teacher and students collaboratively engage in dialogic interaction leads students to their zones of proximal development with assistance from the teacher. I will demonstrate how students developed genre analysis skills through responsive mediation and how the outcomes indicated students’ development of TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) writing genre. Participants are expected to come away with strategies to teach English writing with genre analysis skills and how to use assessment as a part of instruction rather than as a measurement tool to give a grade.
