A professionally-social afternoon that welcomes family members, too!

Welcome to the annual Yongin Kotesol Summer Event! The way we do it includes a time for presentation and sharing. That starts around 2 pm and then a Pot-Luck and Bar-B-Q about 3 pm.

Our goal: We provide a bit of professional development followed by a relaxing time of sharing great food!

Our "Event" as professional development:

Nearing the end of the semester and needing to productively have those "last classes"? Maybe you are preparing for summer camps, have a full schedule of tutoring or you are simply getting ideas for next semester.  Let us help!

Games are always eye-catching and can be an English learning "win-win" if we know how to use games for educational purposes. Our leadership from Yongin Kotesol will bring their "bag of tricks" and "time-tested favorites" along with a couple guest speakers who recently gave led a profesional development session down at Woosong University.

EDUTAINMENT, Entertainment that is designed to be educational, as defined by Webster’s Dictionary. The students use these fun activities to help enhance and reinforce their learning, without much effort.
“Using simulations and games are two of the most effective techniques for a teacher when he or she wants to allow second or foreign language learners practice in the target language. Both simulations and games allow learners not only to practice forms that they have already learned, but also allow them to experiment with new structures. All this is done in non threatening situations. (Gaudart, H. (1999). Games as Teaching Tools for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Simulation & Gaming, 30(3), 283-291.  https://doi.org/10.1177/104687819903000304)

Some examples of Edutainment used in classrooms today:
1- Jenga. This is used to reinforce vocabulary and grammar. Within the jenga sets are the 50 top used nouns, verbs, and words in the English Language. Students pull out a Jenga piece and If there is a word on it, they need to use it in a sentence. Different rounds have different rules.
2- Ellen’s Heads Up- In this game, played on a phone or tablet is an interactive way for students to practice vocabulary from their chapters or book. This gives the students the opportunity to use circumlocution to get their teammates to state the words, which in turn reinforces their knowledge of the word and ways to describe these words.
3- Mystery Box PPT: A game that is designed to highly motivate English learners to actively participate while having fun learning. The activity can be adjusted depending on lessons learned in class but great for reviewing vocabulary, asking and answering questions etc.
4- Digital Escape Room Google Form: An activity that can be played individually or with teams. Great for reviewing lessons on vocabulary, grammar and writing simple sentences while trying to escape. Each question leads them closer to unlock the digital room.
5. Catch Phrase PPT: A bonus game just for this workshop! An excellent writing activity that will engage your students to get excited about writing!

We encourage an "open-invitation-to-share". Similar to our sister chapters who do "swap-shop" and "share your ideas" sessions. Got an idea? Do tell us!!

Also for sharing; MENU

A Pot-Luck Bar-B-Q means we welcome your contributions!

We do heartily encourage you to bring a "dish to pass" something that 8-10 people can easily enjoy. (We hope for approximately 30 people) This way of organizing is to be more like a family-outing. Also, it is an intentional effort to make sure people with special diets and requests can feel totally free to join and share.

Our chapter will provide "protein" - non-meat alternatives and a variety of hamburgers, hot dogs, sausages, etc.

Fruits, Desserts, Finger-friendly foods are most certainly requested!

Additional Notes: Greener Days at the Park and Beyond

Help us be more environmentally conscious. We do want to be intentional about avoiding overly packaged purchases. If possible, help us to reduce our plastic consumption and overall cabon foot-print. While we, as a chapter/an organization/a society still have a ways to go...we will encourage a discussion about how we can make future activities more attentive to climage-chage. (For example, our grills will be portable and use some of the charcoal we have already purchased - but we will want to consider how to improve this for future events).
