Title:
Humor, Metaphor, Global Crisis, and the EFL Classroom
Abstract:
This presentation explores how humor and metaphor was used to discuss the difficult topic of climate change in a small class of Korean middle school ELLs in an academy (hagwon) during a debate and literature course. By using multiple metaphors associated with a single overarching metaphor, that of stopping a bus from speeding over a cliff, both climate change and commonly-proposed solutions to it were explored in a humorous and novel way. This proved beneficial to both the students and the teacher, as the use of humor and metaphor bolstered the students’ motivation and positive emotion, provided support for multiple schemata, and helped decrease potential anxiety about global crises.

Abstract: This presentation is all about supercharging student presentation skills using fun drama techniques. We'll kick things off by looking at why vocal warm-ups are so important to get students ready to speak clearly and confidently. Then, we'll dive into some short, targeted role-plays designed to tackle common pronunciation problems for Korean speakers. These role-plays aren't just for practice; they also get students working together, collaborating, and feeling more comfortable speaking in front of others. You'll also learn about group games that boost concentration and teamwork, helping students really rely on their classmates and build a strong sense of unity. Finally, we'll cover how to use space wisely and make presentations pop with props, images, and music, transforming ordinary talks into truly memorable experiences.
