Voicing With AI: Exploring AI-Supported Language Play in the Classroom

Many language teachers are justifiably worried about the ways in which students are using generative AI, including the potential for plagiarism and to bypass language practice opportunities. In this workshop we will explore language play as a starting point for a possibly helpful relationship with AI-generated language. Language play activities focus on using language for pleasure and imaginative fun, rather than solely functional outcomes. Inspired by Mikhail Bakhtin’s notion of “voice” and “double-voicing”, the presenter will share activities in which learners might feel motivated to take increasing control of language and to develop a critical relationship with generative AI. As well as having opportunities to reflect on AI use and its role in our classrooms and learners’ lives, attendees will hopefully come away from this workshop with knowledge about some different AI tools and classroom activities that could be used with them.
