Designing and Using Chatbots in Your Classroom

Learn to create chatbots and related resources that give your students a reliable go-to tool in a world of inconsistent and unknown AI options. You'll be able to tailor these tools to your specific teaching context and student needs.

Format: Online workshop

Target Audience: Teachers, primarily language teachers (but not exclusively), with any degree of familiarity with chatbots who are interested in creating tools tailored to their context and exploring classroom applications.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

*Be able to create a basic chatbot tailored to their specific teaching context. Note: You might not have a final, working version of your bot at the end of the day!
*Know key factors in integrating chatbots effectively into lesson plans and classroom activities.

Tools Covered

We'll primarily work with ChatGPT, due to its ubiquity, but will also mention other alternatives (both free and paid)

Requirements

*Your own device with internet connection

 *A free-tier subscription to ChatGPT

*No prior chatbot experience necessary

Support

Facilitators will be available throughout Saturday's sessions for personalized guidance, plus flexible follow-up support on Sunday.

Saturday, August 23

Live Online Session

Time: 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM (KST) << Note the time change.

This session blends demonstration, discussion, and guided exploration. The pacing will adapt to participant needs and interests.

1. Why Chatbots?

Explore classroom problems chatbots can help address

Identify where AI fits into your teaching practice

Discuss risks, benefits, and use cases

2. Building a Bot: Cooperative Construction

The group will build a simple chatbot together

Step-by-step walkthrough using ChatGPT’s Custom GPT builder

Define tone, role, and instructions collaboratively

Observe how small changes affect performance

Shared reflection on how the process applies to each participant’s context

3. Integrating Chatbots into Your Classroom

Brainstorm and draft chatbot-enhanced activities or lessons

Consider student needs, ethical use, and classroom workflow

Share ideas and receive peer/facilitator feedback

Wrap-up and next steps

Follow-Up Day – Drop-In Format

No formal sessions. Facilitators will be available online to provide:

Technical support and troubleshooting

Feedback on chatbot designs or lesson plans

Peer discussion and sharing

Guidance on refining or extending your chatbot project
